Trusting that Dave would be fine while he waited for me, the first thing I did when I walked in was have a shower. When I got out, I felt so much better. After saying hi to Snowbelle, I got my laptop and started my column.

Everything Emily - The Twelve Dates of Christmas

Date 7, Seven Swans-A-Swimming

First things first… last bird date!!!!! And it went about as well as the rest of them. My date KB runs a bird rescue facility in the city. When I met him, he walked out in scrubs, and I’m here to tell you that until you’ve seen a hot man in scrubs, you haven’t lived.

I liked KB, he was kind, caring and passionate. He wasn’t the reason the date didn’t go well, in fact, in another environment I think we could have had a good time. But the birds have a way of changing every situation.

First, I have to tell you that no matter how clean an animal facility is, it still smells bad. You must get used to it if you work there, but going in for the first time, you notice it. KB took me on a tour of the building… there were so many birds. I had no idea that many birds get hurt in the city on a regular basis. They would be smarter if they decided to move to the country.

Eventually it was time to get to the reason I was there, the swans. I don’t know the reason the swans were there (I didn’t ask), but there was a family of swans that had been rescued from Central Park. Five babies and two parents. I was pretty sure I could handle the babies. In my head I’d been expecting something like a baby chicken, a tiny cute fluffball, I was very wrong about that. Baby swans are quite a bit bigger, and these ones were almost a month old, so they looked huge to me. They were still fluffy but some of them were almost a foot tall. Good thing there were only five of them.

Now, picture this… I have on this crazy glove/puppet that looks like an adult swan, I’m using it to pick up LIVE insects out of a bag and then feeding them to the baby swans. To say I was a little out of my comfort zone would be an understatement. It went better than I thought, but it still felt like my fingers were going to be missing when the puppet came off. Luckily, I still have all my digits, they’re just a little sore.

Once that was done, it was time to feed the parents of the babies. Remember we’re talking about full grown adult swans and me in the same space. If you think that sounds like a recipe for disaster, you would be right. It was my job to feed them algae and minnows. KB made it look easy. The swans completely ignored him and that gave me confidence that I really shouldn’t have had.
